May 17, 2026 – Monterey Police Department officials report that on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at approximately Monterey PD stalking5:17 p.m., Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Ramona Avenue in response to an open 911 call reporting a possible domestic disturbance heard in the background. Officers determined that the victim was the reporting party and was fearful of her boyfriend, James Machado, 47, of Del Rey Oaks.

When officers arrived, they found the front door unlocked and the rear sliding glass door shattered. Officers checked the residence and determined no one was inside. Officers then located the victim outside the residence. The investigation determined that Machado had damaged the sliding glass door and later took the victim’s cell phone from her hands while she was attempting to call 911, preventing her from completing the emergency call.

Officers began searching for Machado but were initially unable to locate him. At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers located Machado driving a vehicle near the original call location.

During the investigation, officers learned that Machado had repeatedly contacted the victim using another phone after taking her cell phone. Officers documented call log evidence showing that Machado called the victim’s relative’s phone over seventy times within approximately one hour. Officers also observed signs that Machado was under the influence of alcohol and conducted a DUI investigation.

Machado was transported and booked into the Monterey County Jail for violations of California Penal Code 211 PC – Robbery, 594(a) PC – Vandalism, 646.9(a) PC – Stalking, 591.5 PC – Damage or Destroy Wireless Communication Device, 12022.1(b) PC – Committing a Felony While Released on Bail, 23152(a) California Vehicle Code (VC) – Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, and 23152(b) VC – Driving With a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08% or Greater. His bail was set at $60,000.
