Death Investigation
May 28, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials report that they are releasing the cause and 
manner of death of 34-year-old Grant Parker, who was in custody at the San Diego Central Jail (SDCJ). On Sunday, March 8, 2026, Sheriff's Homicide investigators were notified that Mr. Parker was transported to a local hospital following an apparent self-inflicted hanging.
On Sunday, March 8, 2026, at approximately 2:55 p.m., Sheriff's Deputies at the San Diego Central Jail were performing their routine duties when they discovered Mr. Parker hanging inside his assigned cell. He was housed alone. Upon observing the situation, the deputies immediately activated 9-1-1, requested assistance from the facility's medical staff, and began life-saving measures.
Paramedics and the San Diego Fire Department assumed life-saving measures upon their arrival, and Mr. Parker was transported to a local hospital. Despite all efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at approximately 1:15 p.m.
The Medical Examiner's Office has completed an autopsy of Mr. Parker and determined the cause of death to be hanging. The manner of death was classified as suicide.
Mr. Parker was arrested by the San Diego Police Department on February 14, 2026, and had been in Sheriff’s custody since February 15, 2026. He was facing charges of murder and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.
The San Diego Sheriff's Office extends our sympathies to the decedent's family and all those affected by his passing. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will continue to support the family during this difficult time.
The Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) was notified regarding the incident. As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and is conducting a thorough investigation to ensure all aspects of this incident are examined.
