August 13, 2026 – Yuba County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on August 11, 2026, at approximately 11:49 a.m., the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area formerly known as the Hollywood Trailer Park near the 200 block of A Street in Marysville following a report of a stabbing.

Responding personnel provided medical aid to Black male adult, later identified as Akili Lewis, 46 years old of Marysville. Lewis was transported to Adventist Health and later succumbed to his injuries.

Yuba County Sheriff’s detectives responded and began investigating the incident. Investigators later determined that the assault occurred in the river-bottom area near a transient encampment. Witnesses stated that during the altercation the suspect yelled multiple racial slurs directed at the victim.

The investigation led detectives and members of the Sheriff’s Office POP Team to arrest a White male adult, 48-year-old Jesse Stewart of Marysville on suspicion of homicide, in violation of California Penal Code section 187, with an alleged hate-crime component under California Penal Code section 422.55.

With assistance from Yuba County Sheriff’s Office Unmanned Aircraft Systems personnel and Dive Team members, investigators recovered a knife from the Yuba River that is believed to have been used in the assault.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No additional information is being released at this time.
