UPDATE: SDPD OIS – 3600 block of Beyer Blvd., in San Ysidro 

August 13, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials are releasing the name of the officer involved in the officer‑involved shooting that occurred in San Ysidro.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded to an officer‑involved shooting that occurred on the morning of July 29, 2026, in the 3600 block of Beyer Blvd. in the City of San Diego.

At approximately 7:05 a.m., a San Diego Police Department officer located a vehicle reported as stolen driving within an apartment complex, resulting in an officer‑involved shooting. A passenger inside the vehicle was struck. Additional officers arrived, provided medical aid, and requested paramedics. The injured passenger was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non‑life‑threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was detained but later released. The injured individual was also not arrested.

No San Diego Police Department officers were injured during the incident.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been identified as Officer Ricardo Zambrano.  Officer Zambrano has been with the San Diego Police Department for about eight years and is assigned to patrol at the Southern Division.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation into the officer‑involved shooting. At this stage, the motivation and circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Detectives are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing all aspects of the event.

The investigative and review process for officer‑involved shootings is thorough and multi‑layered. Once the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether any criminal liability exists. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officer’s discharge of the firearm.
