Sheriff’s Office Investigating CHPD Officer-Involved Shooting
October 23, 2026 – Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office officials report that just before noon on Thursday,
October 22, 2026, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received information regarding a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer who had a suspect at gunpoint. The incident subsequently developed into a vehicle pursuit. A Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the pursuit traveling eastbound on Business 80 near El Camino Avenue. At that time, two CHP vehicles and one Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) vehicle were involved in the pursuit. The deputy did not participate in the pursuit, which continued onto southbound Fulton Avenue.
The suspect eventually stopped his vehicle on Fulton Avenue, just north of Michelle Drive, and exited while armed with a knife. The suspect began pacing back and forth in front of his vehicle as CHP and CHPD officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. One Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Deputy arrived on scene and prepared a less-lethal shotgun in anticipation of a potential confrontation. At the same time, CHPD Officers deployed a taser, but it was ineffective.
Despite repeated commands to drop the knife, the suspect charged toward officers while still armed. The Sheriff’s deputy discharged one less-lethal round, striking the suspect in the chest. As the suspect continued advancing toward officers, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire. Officers immediately began providing lifesaving medical aid until Fire arrived. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition. The suspect’s knife was recovered from the scene.
No Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies or CHP Officers fired their duty weapons. Two CHPD officers discharged their duty weapons. No deputies or officers were injured.
The investigation into this incident is still ongoing. Based on the incident’s jurisdiction, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau will lead the investigation. An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
