December is the peak time of year for home fires caused by candles. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) from 2007-2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 10,630 home structure fires that were started by candles. That's an average of 29 home candle fires per day. These candle fires caused 115 deaths and 903 injuries. Help lower those statistics by following these candle safety guidelines:
- Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
- Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
- Use flameless candles. They look and smell like real candles.
- Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won't tip over easily.
- Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.
- Light candles carefully. Keep hair and loose clothing away from the flame.
- Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
Remember, a candle is an open flame, which means that it can easily ignite anything that can burn.
