Nationwide, more than 2,500 people die each year and almost 14,000 people are injured in fires. In the event of a fire, time is of the essence, every second counts! Once a fire starts in a home, there is no time to plan on how to get out. You may have only 1-2 minutes to get out safely. Now is the time to sit down with your family and make a step-by-step plan for escaping a fire in your home. Don't just plan it; practice it at least twice a year with everyone in your home at night and during the daytime.

  • Draw a map of each level of the home. Show two ways out of every room.

  • Have an outside meeting place like a mailbox, tree, or a rock outcropping.

  • Practice your plan to make sure that children and adults react to the smoke alarm and know what to do.

  • Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to get out.

  • Install smoke alarms inside every sleeping area, in hallways outside of sleeping areas and on every level of your home.

  • Test your smoke alarm once a month by pushing the button and hearing the sound.
Practice getting out quickly and safely, your life depends on it!

Helpful Information for Hot Weather

Special Hot Weather Reminder:
Mariposa County Fire Department would like to remind you of the dangers in leaving children, animals, and the elderly in closed vehicle, especially as the weather gets hotter. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a locked car sitting in the summer sun quickly turns into an oven, and temperatures can climb from 78 degrees to 100 degrees in just three minutes, to 125 degrees in 6-8 minutes. Parking in the shade, cracking windows open and tinted windows do not make a difference in the interior temperature of a closed car, according to pediatric researchers.

Kids and Adults are at great risk for heatstroke, which can lead to a high fever, dehydration, seizures, stroke and death. Animals do not sweat so their body temperature heats up quickly making them at risk of overheating (hyperthermia), heatstroke and death. Think that quick trip back into the house to get that forgotten item will be ok?... Think again... Even five minutes locked in a car when it's hot outside endangers children, adults and pets.

NEVER leave a child alone inside a vehicle… not even for a minute!

Vegetation fires are preventable if you follow some basic safety rules:

  • Do your property clearing before 10:00 A.M.
  • When driving, if you need to pull off the road, do not park in dry vegetation.
  • Do Not leave candles unattended.
  • Make sure to properly dispose of all cigarette butts.

And remember, fireworks are illegal throughout Mariposa County year-round.

Driving Reminder
Mariposa County Fire Department would like to remind you to limit possible distractions that could take your attention away from driving.  When driving at high speeds on our mountain roads it is of the utmost importance you concentrate on the roads, your vehicle and the weather conditions.  A distraction of just a split second can be disastrous.

Thank You!
