Water Safety Tips for Rivers, Lakes and Dams
Summertime! Those rising temps lead us to water to cool off and have fun! But, we need to be aware of the dangers.
Here are a few safety tips that can save your life:
· Pay attention to warning signs, they are there to keep you safe.
· When walking around dams, rivers or lakes be careful of slippery or steep banks. Stay away from sloping edges near water. Overhanging banks can easily break off.
· If you get into trouble DON’T PANIC. If you are a rescuer, reach or throw an aid to rescue someone in trouble.
· Float feet first if you are caught in a strong current.
· Beware of boats. Do not swim near boat ramps or in boating areas.
· Wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets whenever children or weak swimmers are in, on or around water.
· Ensure that everyone in your family learns to swim well by enrolling them in age-appropriate swim classes. And, keep children under constant supervision.
Remember that swimming in lakes, rivers and streams is different from swimming in a pool. More skills and energy are required for natural water environments because of cold water and air temperatures, currents, waves, etc. Be smart and be safe!
