July 29, 2021 - For today, Thursday, July 29, 2021, strong upper-level ridging will continue to bring hot, dry and unstable weather to the fire area through Fri. Relative humidity recoveries along upper slopes and Plumas County Sheriff logoridges will be minimal as thermal belt effects strengthen. Afternoon W-SW general winds will be on the lighter side, although locally breezy up canyon winds will still develop and be strengthened by strong solar heating. Smoke in western areas will lift first around mid-morning with deeper valleys taking until early to mid-afternoon to completely ventilate. NE down canyon overnight through mid-morning winds will be enhanced by hot valley temperatures and a resulting thermal low.

This means that there is a potential for increased fire activity today. Successive drying days increase chance for rekindle. Main fire activity will continue in the North and West sides of the fire as unburned interior islands consume. The fire will remain active tonight as dry fuels continue to consume. Very poor overnight humidity recovery will allow activity early. Spotting remains the greatest threat for escape and spread. Probability of Ignition (PIG) is high today due to higher temperature. Spotting distances should remain less than 1/2 mile, unless an extreme crown run occurs. Increased activity is again likely when the smoke cover breaks with inversion lift. Large fuel mop up still critical due to dryness.

Remember that weather and fire behavior can change quickly, and it is important to stay out of the way of fire personnel and law enforcement. Continue to monitor vetted information on the current situation.
