August 2, 2021 - We have an update on the injured bear cub known as “Tamarack,” and some video to share as well.
The cub is being treated at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. He was found with burn injuries on July 25th by a Markleeville family who had just returned home after evacuations.
The bear had burn injuries on all 4 paws and was suffering from malnourishment.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care’s Manager of Rehabilitation Jenny Curtis told us today that Tamarack has been eating well and has gained 7 pounds. The burn injuries to Tamarack’s rear paws have been healing on their own, and he no longer has to wear bandages. As you can see in the video, the cub’s front paws remain bandaged, and he still uses his right elbow when moving, but he is well on the road to recovery. His front paws are going to receive grafts of tilapia skin next week. Tilapia skin grafting has proven successful with animal burns in the past.
The rehabilitation center will continue to care for “Tamarack” through the winter and plans to release him in another area in the spring.
