August 3, 2021 -  The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Dixie Fire in Butte and Plumas Counties for Tuesday.

Fire: The Dixie Fire is now 249,635 acres with 35% containment. Fire activity increased as higher temperatures, drier conditions and gusty southwest winds developed.

Smoke: There will be major smoke impacts north of the fire. At times Chester-Westwood-Susanville may reach the worst category on the AQI scale: hazardous. While the concentration will decrease with distance, unhealthy levels may occur as far as Alturas or even Southern Oregon. Janesville-Doyle-Herlong can expect moderate and USG. The Central Valley should see moderate conditions.

Tips to Protect Pets:
Keep pets indoors as much as possible, and keep your windows shut. Birds are particularly susceptible and should not be allowed outside when smoke or particulate matter are present. Let dogs and cats outside only for brief bathroom breaks if air quality alerts are in effect. Avoid intense outdoor exercise during periods of poor air quality; exercise pets/horses after smoke has left. Have a pet evacuation kit ready, and include your animals in your disaster preparedness planning.
