A hot and dry airmass supported steady fire spread in all fuel types. Fire growth was primarily a function of rapid uphill runs and roll-out due to steep, complex terrain. Better ventilation provided new growth opportunities along the south side of Trinity River. Western expansion continued with transport winds from the east during the first portion of the day. The fire is burning in the 2008 Cedar Fire, the 2012 Flat Fire, and 2015 River Complex burn scars. Predominate fuel type is converted brush. Heavy dead and down components are dominant in many areas. All live fuels are cured to levels normally seen in late September. |

August 11, 2021 - Monument Fire Update for Wednesday Morning, 62,490 acres and remains at 3% containment.

Current Situation: Overnight resources saw active fire on all flanks of the fire as it continued backing down hill towards established control lines. Short-range spotting was more pronounced due to wind gusts on the western and southern edges of the fire. Firefighters kept the 50 acre spot fire near Burnt Ranch to the west of Friedrich Road. Favorable weather conditions were observed for a second night, allowing for firing operations where firefighters brought fire from the power lines and south to tie in a large slopover back into the road system.
Firefighters continued working the perimeter of the large spot fire south of Hocker Meadow near Junction City. CAL FIRE resources remain in the area assisting with contingency line constructions. Crews continued to engage the fire as it impacted the East Fork Road in Helena and successfully held the fire at the road. This morning, the Monument Fire showed a steady progression of size to 62,490 acres and remains at 3% containment. The fuels are poised and ready to burn when wind and topographical features align. When that happens we anticipate fast moving uphill runs and long-range spotting. As more resources arrive, fire managers will prioritize them to be ready to battle the fire with a quick, aggressive attack if fire spots across containment lines.
Today, crews will focus their efforts on Junction City, Burnt Ranch and surrounding communities by preparing structures, deploying hose lines and monitoring up in and around the fire to preserve structures and those values of risk. Our aerial support crews are available to fly if smoke conditions improve, they are prepared to fly at a moment’s notice to assist ground crews with suppression efforts as soon as it is deemed safe to fly. We are working diligently to return residents back into their communities when safe to do so, and we appreciate your support and patience while we work to suppress the Monument Fire.
Weather: Last night, warm, dry air remained over the region, with up-slope wind gusts of 20 mph and poor overnight recoveries with light transport winds allowing heavy smoke to fill into the region. Today, temperatures will stay in the 100s, with wind shifts from southeast to northwest up-canyon winds in the afternoon. There is a heat advisory warning starting tomorrow and a slight chance of thunderstorms tomorrow.

Very hot temperatures well into the triple digits will continue next week with very dry conditions. Daytime humidities will drop into the low teens and single digits during the day with poor recoveries overnight. Dry thunderstorms will be possible by mid to late week. |
