August 15, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Monument Fire for Sunday.
Fire: The McFarland Fire grew 1000 acres to 43,703 and was last reported at 68% containment. The Monument Fire is at 7% containment and is now 82,475 acres. Both fires remain most active on the southeast perimeter where they are strongly influenced by the afternoon winds. Those winds are expected to pick up today and continue into Monday which could lead to more active fire behavior.
Smoke: Smoke remains mostly stagnant this morning, however, when winds shift from the northwest this afternoon, they are expected to be stronger and more sustained, so there is a chance that this will soon push some of the smoke out of the area. Communities close to the fire will hopefully start to see improved air quality today and early next week. With that stagnant smoke starting to move, more impacts may be felt to the east of the fires before dispersing.
