August 22, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Dixie Fire for Sunday.
Fire: The Dixie Fire is now 721,298 acres, an increase of 7,079 acres since yesterday, with 37% Containment. Active fire behavior remains on both the East and West Zones
Smoke: Heavy smoke has sunk into valley bottoms and drainages overnight. This is keeping areas downslope of the active fire (i.e., Chester, Old Station and Susanville regions) in Unhealthy to Hazardous air quality this morning. Improvement is expected this afternoon as light southwest winds begin to lift the smoke and drift it easterly. Quincy, upwind of active fire, is expected to see moderate smoke impacts with periods of heavier smoke possible midday. Communities further west of the active fire, such as Paradise, Chico and Oroville, should see continued Moderate air quality as the southwest flow brings in cleaner air from the coast. The wild-card is if smoke from other fires moves into this forecast area, which could slightly impact air quality.
Health and Safety:
Long-term smoke events usually have periods when the air is better. When air quality improves, even temporarily, air out your home to reduce indoor air pollution https://www.airnow.gov/sites/default/files/2021-07/reduce-your-smoke-exposure.pdf
