August 23, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Caldor Fire for Monday.
Fire: The Caldor fire is now 106,562 acres, with 5% containment. Surface winds across the fire will again be from the SW with ridgetop gusts up to 15mph. Fire behavior is expected to be similar to yesterday with activity around most of the perimeter and potential spotting up to .5 mile.
Smoke: Moderated SW winds will continue again today. Winds and smoke transport will be dominated by terrain and diurnal patterns. Expect smoke to transport over the sierra crest to the E/NE during the day and drain back to the W/SW down the Hwy. 50 corridor in the evening/overnight. Those in Grass Valley, Placerville, and Auburn should see conditions improve to the Moderate level by 4:00 p.m., so consider planning your outdoor activities in the evening, before conditions degrade overnight. Those in the Tahoe Basin can generally expect the lowest PM 2.5 concentrations in the morning, before conditions worsen by early afternoon as fire activity and smoke transport increases.
Health and Safety: Take it easier during smoky times to reduce how much smoke you inhale. If it looks or smells smoky outside, avoid strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn or going for a run. Reduce Your Exposure
