August 26, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Dixie Fire for Thursday.
Fire: The Dixie Fire is now 747,091 acres, an increase of 12,027 acres since yesterday, with 45% Containment. Active fire behavior and smoke production remains predominantly on the northern and southeastern perimeters of the Dixie Fire.
Smoke: After southwesterly winds yesterday improved air quality into the Moderate range in most communities, changes are in store for today. Lighter winds over the region will allow smoke to spread and sink into valleys and drainages on all sides of the fire, degrading air quality through the day. Areas nearest active portions of the fire (i.e., Chester) should see Very Unhealthy conditions. Those communities further from the fire (i.e., Chico, Oroville and Doyle) should see worsening conditions to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Furthermore, smoke from other fires in NW California is projected to drift into this region, contributing to these higher smoke impacts. This trend will continue into tomorrow with widespread Unhealthy conditions forecast.
Health and Safety:
Long-term smoke events usually have periods when the air is better. When air quality improves, even temporarily, air out your home to reduce indoor air pollution https://www.airnow.gov/sites/default/files/2021-07/reduce-your-smoke-exposure.pdf
