August 27, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Caldor Fire for Friday.
Fire: The Caldor fire is now 143,941 acres, with 12% containment. Fire behavior is expected to be similar to yesterday; however, fuels are extremely dry and the spotting distance will be .5 mile.
Smoke: There is widespread smoke on the West side of the forecast area this morning. The Northerly component in the winds last night reduced smoke levels on the North side of the Tahoe Basin; however, South Lake continues to be heavily impacted. Smoke transport from the Caldor will be predominantly to the E/SE today. This should be a slightly more favorable direction for those on the North side of the Basin; however, South Lake will likely continue to experience heavy smoke. Those in drainages on the West side of the Sierra Crest will see smoke linger longer today under light winds. Light winds and heavy overnight pooling are likely to continue through Sunday before a more robust SW flow returns.
Health and Safety: Take it easier during smoky times to reduce how much smoke you inhale. If it looks or smells smoky outside, avoid strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn or going for a run. Reduce Your Exposure
