August 28, 2021 - Here are the operational updates for the Dixie Fire from the Lassen National Forest for Saturday, August 28, 2021.  This page will be updated.

The Grizzly/Walker spot fire has become very active this afternoon and has stood up a sizable and very visible column. Both the Grizzly spot and the Walker Spot have burned together south of Genesee Valley Road, and fire managers say the column is in the Wards Creek area, south of where those two fires merged.

The fire continues to move southward; the column is due to the large timber in that area that is fueling the fire. Additional resources have been requested and available resources already on the Dixie are being moved to the area to assist in prepping lines to the south. This additional work is anticipated to be completed before the red flag warning forecast for Monday and Tuesday.

8:15 A.M. DIXIE FIRE EAST ZONE OPERATIONAL UPDATE

The priorities on the Dixie Fire East Zone haven’t changed. They are the Genesee Valley area, Taylorsville and prepping the areas south and southeast of the fire. The largest size change was between the Grizzly spot and the Walker spot which are trying to merge, and 1 to 1.5 miles of growth to the south, mostly from the Walker spot.

Crews and equipment continue to hold the Grizzly spot up on the ridge and it has not grown to the west. Today, aircraft will assist crews to ensure the line stays secure. The dozer line running south out of the Grizzly spot along the ridge, which then curves east, will be pushed further east and tied back into the Walker Fire scar to create a “catcher’s mitt,” providing a place to stop the Grizzly and Walker spots from moving any further south. The dozer line coming down off Grizzly Ridge which runs west into Greenhorn and Lava Peak, then south into Squirrel Creek, is going well but some work is still needed. These lines will be used to protect the communities to the southwest of the fire if needed. Crews will continue to prep the dozer line running south in Pine Creek Valley and try to tie it into Rock Pine Creek and then tie it into the road system

All lines in the Genesee Valley held last night as firefighters continued work on mopping up and securing homes. Behind Taylorsville, firefighters got good depth put in behind the houses, further protecting them. Crews are working on adding additional dozer line to the south of Taylorsville.

Between the fire and communities to the south, firefighters are working on a dozer line to top of Turner Ridge. When they reach the top, they will look at how to tie that line into the Genesee Beckwourth Road and an old fire scar.

The Peters Creek area is holding well and is close to patrol status. Antelope Lake area is looking good and is now in patrol status. Firefighters are focused on the Wilcox cabins today and plan to try and wrap it for protection. Some crews are working on backhaul to get equipment out and off the line in this area. Dyer Mountain is nearly complete, but mop-up and patrol continue and backhaul is underway.
