September 7, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Caldor Fire for Tuesday.
Fire: 216,358 acres, 48% contained. Aggressive suppression efforts and targeted mop-up tactics is helping to reduce fire activity in all divisions of the fire. Higher temps and low humidity today will increase potentials for visible smoke columns near Lower Echo summit and Caples Lake. Heavy fuels in the eastern portion of the fire continues to be the main source of smoke in the American River Valley and Tahoe Basin. Increasing west winds this afternoon will help lift and push smoke up and away around noon in most locations.
Smoke: Clearing conditions yesterday afternoon lasted into the evening hours, and have reduced the starting concentrations across the forecast area this morning. South Lake Tahoe to Kyburz and Sly Park will still start the day in V. Unhealthy/Hazardous conditions, but will see improved conditions by early afternoon. Carson City and Gardnerville will see limited change in visible smoke until the late evening. Locations to the south of HWY 88/89 will see light smoke this morning, followed by blue skies in the early afternoon. Communities of Tahoe City, Truckee, Grass Valley, Reno, Carson City, and Gardnerville will see much improved air quality today. This evening, smoke will settle into the Tahoe Basin again, returning the air quality to V. Unhealthy in communities near the east side of the fire. Continued progress on the fire will assist in the reduction of smoke impacts tonight. Incoming weather Wednesday has the potential to bring smoke from the Dixie Fire into the Tahoe Basin.
Health and Safety: Take it easier during smoky times to reduce how much smoke you inhale. If it looks or smells smoky outside, avoid strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn or going for a run. Reduce Your Exposure
