September 8, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Caldor Fire for Wednesday.
Fire: 217,007 acres, 50% contained. The additional acres in the last few days are related to the strengthening of fire lines along HWY 88 near Kirkwood as fire crews try to put this fire to bed. Interior portions of the fire are seeing fewer pockets of isolated torching, along with continued smoldering in the large stumps and downed trees. Crews will continue to connect handline through the steep, rocky, and remote ground in Desolation Wilderness again today.
Smoke: Reduced fire activity has resulted in a downward trend in overnight impacts accumulating in the Tahoe Basin and American River Valley. Communities between South Lake Tahoe and Placerville will continue to see the heaviest smoke conditions between late evening and noon. Light east winds this morning will bring additional smoke from the east side of the fire to the west, while areas north and south of the fire are showing Good/Moderate conditions. This trend will continue until late afternoon when the west winds return. Brief periods of NE winds near the Dixie fire this morning will likely bring additional smoke into the Sacramento valley. Increasing winds tomorrow will help move that smoke off to the east.
Health and Safety: Take it easier during smoky times to reduce how much smoke you inhale. If it looks or smells smoky outside, avoid strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn or going for a run. Reduce Your Exposure
