What’s new in the world of honeybees? What is involved in becoming a beekeeper? “Get the Buzz on Bees” in a free workshop presented by local beekeeper Tim Bryant at the Mariposa Library Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.

Tim has been capturing honeybee swarms and keeping bees as a hobby in Mariposa County since 2011. He is a member of the Mariposa beekeepers group and the coordinator and contact person for the Mariposa honeybee hotline.

Workshop topics will include:

·         Beekeeping in the foothills of Mariposa County;

·         Achieving local sustainability through sharing honeybees, swarms, and local knowledge;

·         Beekeeping misconceptions and surprises;

·         Beekeeping equipment and costs; and,

·         Types and styles of honeybee hives.

At the end of the presentation, participants can try some honey skincare recipes and make a healing ointment to take home. All those interested in this portion of the program should bring a small, clean jar.

While the adult workshop is taking place in the meeting room, children ages 5 to 12 can learn about bees and make a bee hotel (for wild bees) and a beeswax candle in the children’s room.

These workshops are part of the Library’s Green S.T.E.A.M Makerspace Program, which is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
