July 3, 2017 - Mariposa– Peace Officers with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit determined vehicles driving in tall, dead grass caused two recent wildfires in Mariposa.

The Ben Fire was started on June 28, 2017 and was caused by a vehicle driving in tall, dead grass. This fire ultimately burned 630 acres of vegetation and burned across multiple properties.

On June 30, 2017 CAL FIRE responded to a wildland fire in the Hornitos area near Bear Valley Rd. This fire burned a small amount vegetation alongside the roadway and was caused by a vehicle driving through tall, dead grass.

The common factor in these wildfires was vehicles driving through tall, dry grass. CAL FIRE encourages all residents to be aware and take precautions to prevent wildfires. CAL FIRE Prevention Bureau Chief, Bernie Quinn, offers the following tips to reduce the threat of causing a fire when operating vehicles:

• Prior to operating a vehicle, ensure all tires are properly inflated, brakes are in good working condition and the vehicle is well maintained. • If towing a trailer make certain all tow chains are secure. • Check your vehicle gauges frequently. • Never drive or park a vehicle in tall, dead grass.

Any person who accidently starts a wildfire can be held liable for fire suppression costs.
