WHY: The venerable California State and National Park Systems began with Congress’ granting of the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove to California. On June 28, 1864, in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation granting these properties to the state of California to be “held for public use, resort, and recreation…inalienable for all time.” These public institutions have been described as perhaps “America’s, and California’s, Best Idea” ever.
