Yosemite National Park Dog Rock Fire Information for Thursday, October 9, 2014

Update: 4:06 P.M.

Fire Investigation: Fire investigators have determined the cause of the Dog Rock Fire. Based on their investigation it is believed that the fire was start by sparks generated by hot metal fragments from a vehicle. This could be the result of several things such as trailer safety chains dragging on the pavement, vehicle brake parts generating a spark or other sources.

Due to the extremely dry conditions in the park a single spark can start a wildland fire. Visitors can help reduce the likelihood of igniting a wildfire by assuring their vehicles are maintained and operated safely.

Update: 3:37 P.M. NPS

Please see the below update on the Dog Rock Fire. We will update you as soon as new information becomes available

  • The Dog Rock Fire, which began Tuesday afternoon in El Portal, is currently at 250 acres, with 10% containment. The fire grew very little overnight. We expect containment to increase today.
  • The evacuation order for Foresta will be lifted at 1:00 pm today. There are no other evacuation orders at this time.
  • A Type 1 team took over management of the fire at 6 pm yesterday.
  • The Type 1 team has authorized PG&E to assess the power lines. PG&E flew the line for damage assessment this morning. They will confer with the NPS regarding the extent of the damage to power line and poles and estimate the needed repairs in order to restore power to Yosemite Valley.
  • Highway 140 remains closed, due to potential rockfall hazard and the NTSB investigation. NPS roads and resource staff are assessing the extent of the hazard. We still anticipate the road will be closed for at least another 24 hours.
  • All of the other areas of the park remain open. California Highways 41, 120 - Big Oak Flat Road and Tioga Pass as well as the road immediately in the Valley remain open.
  • Smoke will likely be prevalent in El Portal in the morning and in Yosemite Valley in the afternoon.
  • Please check with your supervisor about administrative leave and access to the park. Supervisors with questions should contact their division chiefs for further guidance.

“On behalf of Yosemite National Park, we would like to express our deepest condolences for the loss of the Cal Fire pilot, Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt, who lost his life yesterday fighting the Dog Rock Fire in the park,” stated Don Neubacher, Yosemite National Park Superintendent. “He died while providing a great public service and we share in the mourning and sadness of this loss with our Cal Fire brothers and sisters. Wildland firefighting is an inherently dangerous job and we thank Cal Fire for all their support and sacrifice. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

The Dog Rock Fire, which began October 7, 2014 in afternoon near El Portal, is currently at 246 acres, with 10% containment.

There is active fire along the road, rock fall hazards, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and other agencies are performing an investigation of the aircraft incident.  They are working closely with the Incident Management Team.

There are over 200 firefighters assigned to the fire.  Federal helicopters and air tankers were being used today.

Highway 140 remains closed at the park line, it will likely be a minimum of 24-48 hours before it is re-opened.

Electrical power remains out in Yosemite Valley but we hope to restore it within 48 hours if conditions improve. There is still active fire underneath the power lines.

Evacuation orders are still in effect for residents of Foresta. There are no other evacuation orders at this time.

All of the other areas of the park remain open. California Highways 41, 120 - Big Oak Flat Road and Tioga Pass as well as the road immediately in the Valley remain open.

Update: 9:37 A.M.

Incident Overview

California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 assumed command of the fire at 6:00 PM Wednesday. Assuring the safety of all the firefighters and the public remains the priority for all operations. The fire is located along Highway 140 near the Arch Rock entrance to Yosemite National Park east of El Portal. The highway will remained closed until this danger can be eliminated.

The park is open and campgrounds, hotels, and other visitor services are open and operating at normal hours. Except for the closure of State Highway 140 at El Portal all other park roads are open. Access to Yosemite is available via Wawona (Hwy 41) and Big Oak Flat Road (Hwy 120) and via Tioga Pass (Hwy 120). Visitors may see smoke in the immediate vicinity of the fire.

Firefighters worked through the night to secure the southern flank of the fire along Highway 140. The fire continues to burn downhill toward the highway where firefighters will hold the fire. Burning snags and rolling material present a constant concern to the safety of the firefighters and have the potential to cause increased fire behavior.

Today, firefighters will continue to secure the fire along Hwy 140 working to prevent any burning material from crossing the highway. Fire crews are working along the north perimeter of the fire completing direct fireline and running hoses to assist with mop-up. Firefighters will be supported by helicopters making water drops along the fire perimeter.

The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting the investigation on the air tanker crash that occurred on Tuesday. Pacific Gas and Electric Company will be assessing their power lines in order to prepare to return full power to the Valley. The IMT will provide assistance and support to these entities in order to assure their safety and facilitate their efforts.

Evacuations: Foresta community.

Road Closures: Highway 140 from Park Line near El Portal to the Big Oak Flat Road and El Portal Road Junction.

Fire Facts: 245 acres at 10% containment

Wednesday Evening:

Suppression efforts continue on the approximately 250 acre Dog Rock Fire in Yosemite National Park. Air and ground attack has been aided by favorable weather conditions, which have resulted in minimal fire growth on the western boundary of the park near the Highway 140 entrance. Currently, there is no estimate on the fire’s containment; however crews continue to make significant progress. The National Park Service is being assisted by the United States Forest Service and the California Interagency Incident Management Team 3.

Highway 140 into Yosemite National Park remains closed at the park boundary. Yosemite National Park remains open and Yosemite Valley can be accessed via highways 41, 120 west, and 120 east via Tioga Pass. Campgrounds, hotels, and other visitor services are open and operating at normal hours. The evacuation of the community of Foresta is still in effect.

“With great sadness, the Yosemite National Park community would like to express its deepest condolences to CAL FIRE for the loss of pilot, Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt. Yesterday, Craig lost his life fighting the Dog Rock Fire,” stated Don Neubacher, Yosemite National Park Superintendent. “He died serving and protecting the public from wildland fire. As members of the wildland firefighting community, we also mourn his loss and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

All inquiries regarding the accident involving Hunt, the CAL FIRE pilot who died in yesterday’s accident, should be referred to CAL FIRE Public Information Officer Daniel Berlant at (916) 651-3473.
