August 29, 2017 - Mariposa – As Labor Day weekend approaches; friends and families will visit outdoor recreation areas throughout Madera, Mariposa and Merced counties. In anticipation of the increased outdoor activities, CAL FIRE Madera-Mariposa-Cal FireMerced Unit is urging everyone to exercise extreme caution in every activity.

Wildfires continue to burn in California and much of the state remains at high risk for wildfire. The potential for large, destructive fires only increases as we approach fall.

While making your Labor Day vacation plans please contact your destination directly to obtain current information on closures. Campfire, smoking and cooking restrictions may be in effect.

Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained before you depart and remember to check your tire pressure and exhaust system. Dragging tow chains will throw sparks so make sure you have the correct size trailer ball and hitch and the chains are adjusted to the proper length. Never drive or park your vehicle in tall, dead grass.

Fire is not the only danger that can occur in the outdoors, as water drownings also increase dramatically during this holiday weekend. Warm temperatures make the cool waters of California’s beautiful rivers and lakes very enticing, yet very dangerous. Children should remain under a responsible adult’s supervision at all times, and It is important to wear lifejackets and to never swim alone.

For more ways to be safe this holiday, visit www.ReadyforWildfire.org or www.fire.ca.gov.
