August 30, 2017 - Regular plantings of trout will return to Lake McSwain just in time for Labor Day weekend. On Thursday, 1,500 pounds of rainbow trout will be planted in the foothill reservoir. Regular plants will continue into the future.

“This is the news our anglers have been waiting for,” said MID Parks and Rec Director Bret Theodozio. “Regular trout plants are back. If you’re not already fishing at McSwain, it’s time to dust off your pole and come on up.”
As with other lakes across California, fishing at Lake McSwain was hard hit by the recent 5-year drought. Although sporadic plants were made at Lake McSwain, more frequent plants were curtailed with less fish available across the state.
Moving forward, plants at Lake McSwain are intended to be made on a regular basis. At the end of May, Lake McSwain was planted with 1,500 pounds of trout, including 220 pounds of trophy sized fish. Anglers have continued to catch trout reaching over 20 inches in length and 5 pounds this summer.
Lake McSwain is open for day-use during the Labor Day weekend. All overnight campsites are currently reserved. Some sites are available up the hill at Lake McClure.
In addition to regular trout plants returning, Lake McSwain will also host the 2017 Fall Trout Derby on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8. Space is still available for camping and the derby. Those interested are encouraged to complete and return their forms. Forms can be picked up at the Lake McSwain entrance kiosk or by visiting www.LakeMcClure.com
