September 3, 2017 - A Heat Advisory is in effect across the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Foothills as well as the Kern County mountains and desert through Sunday evening. High temperatures will top above 105 degrees in the Valley and above 100 degrees across the desert areas. Take precautions to combat the heat. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Limit outdoor strenuous activities during the hottest time of the day. Help elderly, kids & pets stay cool. Seek air-conditioned buildings. Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing and a hat. Make sure your pets/animals have a cool area to stay.

Heat Advisory covers West Central San Joaquin Valley-East Central San Joaquin Valley- Southwestern San Joaquin Valley-Southeastern San Joaquin Valley- Mariposa, Madera, and Fresno County Foothills- Tulare County Foothills-Kern County Mountains- Including the cities of Los Banos, Coalinga, Mendota, Fresno, Hanford, Lemoore, Avenal, Corcoran, Bakersfield, Visalia, Oakhurst, Mariposa, Springville, Three Rivers, Tehachapi, and Lake Isabella.

HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM PDT SUNDAY

TEMPERATURES...Highs 92 to 108 Sunday afternoon.

TIMING...Through Sunday evening.

IMPACTS...The excessive heat may quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.
Air Quality Alert

The Mariposa and San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control Districts have issued an Air Quality Alert due to smoke impacts from the surrounding wildfires for Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Mariposa, Tulare, and the Valley Portion of Kern Counties.

This Air Quality Alert is in effect until Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Exposure to particle pollution can cause serious health problems, aggravate lung disease, cause asthma attacks and acute bronchitis, and increase risk of respiratory infections.

Residents are advised to use caution as conditions warrant.

People with heart or lung diseases should follow their doctors advice for dealing with episodes of unhealthy air quality.

Additionally, older adults and children should avoid prolonged exposure, strenuous activities or heavy exertion, as conditions dictate.
