“What is the Grand Jury?” On Saturday, October 18, the Oakhurst Library will be hosting a very informative event for everyone in Madera County.

What makes California Grand Juries unique? What kind of cases to Grand Juries hear? What ability does the Grand Jury have to protect whistleblowers?  How are jurors selected to sit on the Grand Jury and how long do they serve? What role does the public play in the Grand Jury’s function?

The library has invited Judges Ernest LiCalsi and Dale Blea to speak about the role of the Grand Jury in our judicial system.  They will be accompanied by District Attorney Michael Keitz who will talk about his office’s relationship with the Grand Jury of Madera County.

Also speaking are Linda Pennington and Jim Haze, who are prior members of the Grand Jury and they will talk about their experience of serving on the panel.  The current Foreman of the Grand Jury, Leanne Thomson, will be at this event and Jeannie Turpenen, who is the President of the Madera Chapter of the California Grand Jury Association, will be available to answer questions by the public.

All residents in our foothills will be especially interested in hearing about the Grand Jury report on Ground Water Issues in Madera County and

The event will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Library’s Community Room.  There will be county personnel there to answer your questions and help you with enrolling to serve on the panel.
