Sonora, Calif., (October 16, 2014)…The public is invited to attend the Stanislaus National Forest, Artist in the Woods 2014, watercolor workshop Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dodge Ridge Ski Resort on the Summit Ranger District.

Artist in the Woods is an annual program sponsored by the Forest and the 3 Forest Interpretative Association (3FIA) where artists compete for consideration to have their Stanislaus National Forest, inspired art publicly featured.

All levels of experience and skill are welcome at this event. The class fee is $65 with a $25 material fee, which includes a complete kit of artist-quality supplies paid to the 3FIA.  Register online at www.3forests.us/ or call Marie Malo at 209.965.3434 x5343.

Using the autumn forest as inspiration, participants will work through a series of exercises to develop an understanding of some universal design and color principles, as well as specific watercolor tricks. The class will also explore local color challenges, like how Sierra greens differ from East Coast forests and how to make granite glow.

About the artist: one of Laurie’s illustration projects was to paint 50 birds for Sharon Beals’ book “NESTS.” The birds have appeared with the nest photos in international publications and a TED talk, and are currently on display at the National Academy of Sciences. She has also taught illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

About the program: With the goal of creating a sense of stewardship for the beauty of the natural and cultural resources of the Stanislaus National Forest, the Artist in the Woods Program provides professional artists of all media an opportunity to receive creative inspiration from the Sierra Nevada landscape, while pursuing their artistic discipline.

Artists who are selected stay in a historic cabin on the Summit Ranger District for two weeks during the fall. Participating artists donate an original piece of artwork or a performance that is representative of their stay on the Forest and conduct a workshop instructing the public in their discipline.
