April 1, 2018 - SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra along with a coalition of 17 Attorneys General on Friday joined a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Hawaii in Trump v. Hawaii. The case challenges the unlawful provisions of President Trump’s revised travel ban. President Trump’s travel ban will have a direct impact on California, which is home to more than 10 million immigrants. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case on April 25, 2018.
“In California, we understand the urgency of protecting America’s immigrant communities,” said Attorney General Becerra. “This ban is not about national security, but rather it targets people based on their background. It is un-American and serves a political agenda rooted in fear and bias. California will continue to welcome people from all backgrounds and faiths. The California Department of Justice is proud to be a part of this coalition, and will fight against the travel ban every step of the way.”
In the brief, the Attorneys General describe how the unconstitutional revised travel ban hurts the states and their residents, including by harming our colleges and universities, medical institutions, and economies.
The travel ban at issue in this case—the third in a series of discriminatory travel bans from the Trump Administration—places permanent restrictions of varying degrees on travelers from eight nations: Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and Venezuela.
