October 31, 2014 - SACRAMENTO - Of the more than 142,000 young people who participated in the MyVote California Student Mock Election this week, nearly 62 percent chose Jerry Brown for governor. Students also weighed in on the six statewide propositions that are on the November 4 ballot.

Spearheaded by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, the MyVote California Student Mock Election is a hands-on civic engagement project that helps cultivate future voters. The mock election program provides teachers with resources and materials to broaden their civics lessons and make a statewide election a teachable moment.

"Teaching young people about voting starts them on the path of civic engagement," said Secretary Bowen, California's chief elections official. "The mock election gives students the opportunity to research issues and candidates, and make informed decisions based on that research. Students may even share that knowledge with their family members who can vote on November 4."

Mock election results by school and by county are at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/mock-election/2014.

This was the seventh statewide mock election in California. In the last comparable season – the 2010 gubernatorial election – 433 schools participated in the mock election. Attached are the 2014 statewide results as reported by 488 schools.
