May 4, 2018 - The Mariposa County Library is looking for people who would like to share their love of reading and make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering as tutors in the adult literacy program. Math and computer tutors are also being sought.
Tutors must be 18 years old or older; be English speaking; have a high school diploma or passed a high school equivalency exam; and read at a 12th grade level or higher.
Tutors are trained to work with learners on a one-to-one basis. Learners work at their own pace to achieve goals they set for themselves. For example, if a learner wants to write a resume, help children with homework, or pass a high school equivalency test, instruction is directed toward achieving that goal. All program materials are provided free of charge to learners and tutors. Hours are flexible to fit in with the tutors’ and learners’ individual schedules.
Prospective tutors must attend an hour-long orientation followed by a half-day training session. The next orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Mariposa Library. A training session will be held on Wednesday, May 23 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the Library community room. Lunch will be provided during the training.
