May 15, 2018 - Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Monday released the following statement opposing the nomination of Gina Haspel to be CIA Director:
“I will not vote to confirm Gina Haspel as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation Program is one of the darkest chapters in our nation’s history and it must not be repeated.
“This nomination is bigger than one person. The torture program was illegal at the time based on international treaties the United States is signatory to, including the Convention Against Torture and Geneva Convention, but no one has ever been held accountable. I believe those who were intimately involved should not lead the agency.
“The United States must send a message to the world that we hold ourselves to a higher standard than our enemies. For the Senate to confirm someone so involved with the program to the highest position at the CIA would in effect tell the world that we approve of what happened, and I absolutely do not.”
