May 24, 2018 - TUOLUMNE COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has opened northbound and southbound State Route 49 (SR-49) from Moccasin/SR-120 in Tuolumne County to the Tuolumne/Mariposa County line caltransfollowing a long-term closure.

The 6.5-mile stretch of road has been closed since violent storms whipped through the region on March 22, causing hillslides and heavy flooding in parts of Tuolumne and Mariposa counties.

Caltrans and George Reed Construction of Modesto have completed major repairs on SR-49 and highway striping was refreshed today. SR-49 in Tuolumne County will have periodic one-way traffic controls for culvert work the next few weeks, so expect occasional delays as work proceeds. Repair work on SR-49 in Tuolumne County is estimated at $2.5 million to $3 million.

Severe damage from the storm also forced SR-49 in northern Mariposa County and SR-132 in eastern Stanislaus County to close. While the deluge undercut sections of the roadway and destroyed culverts on both sections of SR-49, it carried away a 60-foot section of SR-132.

SR-132 opened Friday, May 18, while SR-49 in Mariposa County (Coulterville to Bear Valley Road) is scheduled to open later this summer.

Caltrans would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation during this process.
