June 5, 2018 - Mariposans have many questions about SB54-The California Values Act, also known as “California Sanctuary Law” and Sheriff Doug Binnewies will answer those questions and clarify misconceptions at a special meeting this Saturday, June 9 at 9:45 A.M. at the Miner’s Roadhouse.

People wonder if undocumented people can be arrested, how does law enforcement know a persons’ legal status, how can law enforcement interact with federal immigration officials, can some arrested people be turned over to ICE officials, how does the law impact Mariposa County, etc.

Sheriff Binnewies has been the Mariposa County Sheriff since 2010, after beginning his law enforcement career in 1990 and working up through the ranks. He moved to the county with his family in 1979 and originally lived in El Portal.

Sheriff Binnewies says, “I have focused my career and energy on providing professional service to the many Mariposa County communities and visitors and work on extending the role of the Sheriff’s Office to be known more for a total service agency focusing on community health to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all to enjoy.”

Binnewies will also be able to answer other questions from community members. Everyone is invited to this important free event, sponsored by the Mariposa Democratic Club. If people want to order breakfast they should arrive at 9:00 A.M. There will be free coffee and water.
