STATE ROUTE 49 SPRINGING BACK TO LIFE

After March’s violent storm that caused severe erosion and a wash out of State Route 49 (SR-49) in Mariposa County, Caltrans crews and construction partners are bringing the road back to life.

Crews have been working tirelessly since the day of the Moccasin Storm – March 22, 2018 – and are aiming to have the closed stretch of northbound and southbound SR-49 from Bear Valley to SR-132 open by Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

Recent work has included rebuilding the slopes alongside the road, installing 24-inch and 36-inch reinforced concrete pipes at drainage system locations and preparing the roadway for paving.

We’d like to thank motorists and local residents for their patience and cooperation during this process.

June 11, 2018 - MARIPOSA COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has closed northbound and southbound State Route 49 (SR-49) for approximately 15 miles from Bear Valley to the junction with SR-132.

The closure is long term and is necessary for repair work due to the violent storm on March 22, 2018.

Caltrans crews and construction partners are working to re-open this section of SR-49 by August 1, 2018.

The roadway on this stretch of SR-49 was severely eroded due to the massive amount of water, and must be given a new foundation and fully repaired before re-opening. This effort is to ensure the safety and efficiency of the roadway for motorists.

Northbound and southbound SR-49 from the Mariposa/Tuolumne County line to Moccasin/SR-120 was re-opened on Wednesday, May 23, 2018. Eastbound and westbound SR-132 from Granite Springs Road to Piney Creek Road in Mariposa County was re-opened on Friday, May 18, 2018.

Motorists can expect an additional hour of travel time due to the closure.

Work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials and construction related issues.
