July 29, 2018 - Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks announced the identity of the firefighter who lost his life today, fighting the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County.
Brian Hughes, captain of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots out of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, died today in the line of duty on the Ferguson Fire.
The fatal incident occurred earlier this morning. Hughes, 33, and his crew were operating in a complex area when he was struck by a tree. He was treated on scene, but passed away before he could be transported to a hospital.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks said, "We are saddened beyond words to report the death of one of our firefighters, Captain Brian Hughes of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots. Hughes' crew was preparing tactical firing operations on the Ferguson Fire on the U.S. Forest Service - Sierra National Forest when he was struck and killed by a tree. Hughes was with the Arrowhead Hotshots for four years and will be dearly missed by everyone at the parks. We grieve his loss."
