September 6, 2018 - CLOVIS, CA. - On Tuesday September 04, 2018, Sierra National Forest (SNF) fire crews responded to two verified reports of smoke which were spotted by fire lookouts Mt. Tom on the SNF, and Delilah on the Sequoia National Forest. The Warm fire is burning near Lake Edison in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, and the Hair Fire is burning near Courtright Reservoir, on the High Serra Ranger District. Both fires were lightning caused by a weather system which moved across the Sierra Crest, spawning several lightning strikes in the area. 

Crews responded to the Warm Fire located in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, near Warm Creek and immediately began suppression operations around a single tree in a 5 X 5 spot, the tree was felled and the fire is 100% contained. Crews will monitor this fire today. The Hair Fire was discovered in Short Hair Meadow near Courtright Reservoir, and is burning less than a 10th of an acre in brush, and timber with low potential. Crews have built handline around this fire, and have begun mop-up to further secure the perimeter. 

The weather forecast for today is expected to be similar to yesterday’s weather in the Sierra, mostly cloudy. Near the Crest today, mostly cloudy in the morning, then chance of showers and slight chance of thunderstorms (with lightning) in the afternoon, chance of precipitation 50 percent. A 20 percent chance of thunderstorms (with lightning) in the afternoon. Highs 79 to 85 at 5000 feet. 66 to 72 at 8000 feet. There may be hold over fires caused by yesterday’s lightning event and the potential for new starts with the forecast today.
