September 7, 2018 - SACRAMENTO, Calif.— The California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) is pleased to announce the six recipients of the 2018 Governor’s Historic Preservation Awards. Each of the projects represents exemplary achievements on behalf of preserving California’s richly diverse heritage.
Established in 1986 by Governor George Deukmejian, the Governor’s Historic Preservation Awards Program is distinguished from other preservation awards in two important respects: it emphasizes involvement by community groups, and it recognizes a broad array of preservation activities, from building rehabilitation to archaeology, education, and preservation planning. The award recipients for this year range from a context statement and survey documenting modern resources in California’s capital city, to restoration of a historic building along Route 66, to preservation of a landscape with strong cultural significance for one of California’s tribal communities.
Below is a brief description of the 2018 award recipients:
Mid-Century Modern in the City of Sacramento Historic Context Statement and Survey is the result of an ambitious, community-driven effort to identify and document the city’s modern resources. The resulting documentation will aid planning decisions by the city, and efforts to nominate properties to the National Register of Historic Places.
Cucamonga Service Station, a community-centered project, succeeded in restoring of one of the few original buildings remaining along historic Route 66 in California. Cucamonga Service Station recently achieved listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Research and Collaboration for the Restoration of Tstyiwi on the Pecho CoastTstyiwi on the Pecho Coastwas a successful collaboration between PG&E, Cal Poly, and the Northern Chumash Tribe resulting in the preservation and restoration of a culturally significant landscape at the site of the former Northern Chumash village of Tstyiwi.
City of West Hollywood Commercial Historic Resources Survey, Context Statement, and Preservation Website representsa project of ambitious scope that successfullyidentified and documented resources associated with the city’s commercial and social development. The project also resulted in creation of a historic preservation website with searchable database and maps.
Digital Media Arts Center representsa collaborative project between Chapman University, the city of Orange, and two of the community’s historical organizations that successfully rehabilitated the city’s historic California Wire & Cable Company building for use as a digital arts lab and studio.
Santa Barbara County Courthouse Mural Room Conservation successfully repaired, cleaned, and restored historic elements and features of the Courthouse Mural Room, including original murals painted on the walls of the room by California Artist Daniel Sayre Grosebeck.
California State Parks’ Director Lisa Mangat and State Historic Preservation Officer Julianne Polanco will present the awards to recipients on Nov. 1, 2018 in Sacramento. The ceremony will be streamed live via OHP’s Facebook and BlueJeans with links to follow at a later time.
