Kevin-CannKevin Cann, District IV Supervisor titles this Board item an "Investment Partnership with the School District."

The following is from the Board packet:

RECOMMENDATION AND JUSTIFICATION:

Approve Committing Up to $29,000 of County Funds to Offset Costs Associated with the Mariposa County Unified School District Being Featured on the "In View" Series Hosted by Larry King. The “In View” series is a cable television program carried on cable networks and prominent cable channels. The producers of the “In View” series find intriguing and frequently-overlooked stories about everyday Americans, small businesses, communities, cities, towns, corporations and more across the nation, and share these stories with television audiences across the United States.

The Mariposa County Unified School District has an opportunity to be featured in a documentary on how the education system feeds the sustainability of our rural economy. It will also produce a 6-8 minute professional product which the County will own and could be a major promotional piece. There will be approximately $29,000 in costs for the School District to sign the contract for this documentary. Staff will be reaching out to the Yosemite/Mariposa Tourism Bureau as well as the Mariposa Economic Development Corporation for possible financial assistance. The School District may also be able to contribute financially.

This opportunity just became available and prior to committing to the documentary, the School District would like assurances that the County will be a financial partner in this endeavor. The School District must sign a contract committing to the documentary by Wednesday, November 26, 2014, or another rural area will be considered for the documentary. If this request is approved, the appropriate budget actions and contracts/agreements for the right to the finished product will be brought back for Board approval.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF BOARD ACTIONS:

In the past, the Board has contributed Tobacco Settlement money for anti-tobacco campaigns and after-school bus needs for the School District.

ALTERNATIVES AND CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

Do not approve committing up to $29,000 of County funds to the School District for a documentary that will be featured on the “In View” television series. The School District will need to identify an alternative funding source or forego being featured on a nationally televised documentary.
