October 15, 2018 - Dennis Bright, 71, who lost his home of 44 years on Yaqui Gulch Road in the 2017 Detwiler Fire, is the subject of a short film that will be shown as part of the Big Tell Film Showcase at the Tower Theatre in Fresno on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m.

A proposal submitted by Mariposa resident Karen Dusek, was one of 10 selected by the Central Valley Community Foundation as winners in this year’s Big Tell film contest. Titled “Just Stuff,” the 5-minute film chronicles the destruction of Bright’s property and his on-going efforts to start anew.

“This film honors the determination and resilient spirit of the 63 families whose homes were destroyed by the fire, a number of whom, like Dennis, were uninsured,” Dusek said.  “It is intended as a source of both information and inspiration. Because the length of the film is so short, I decided to focus on a single individual as representative of the whole.”

A film created by Dusek and fellow Mariposa Library staff member, Rebecca Adams, was selected as a winner in the first Big Tell Film Contest last year. Titled “Literacy Empowers,” it told the story of two volunteer tutors and their learners participating in the Library’s adult literacy program.

The October 19th screening is free and open to the public.
