October 24, 2018 - The Mariposa County Library is looking for people who would like to share their love of reading and writing and make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering as tutors in the Library’s adult literacy program.  Math, ESL and computer tutors are also being sought.

A tutor orientation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library’s meeting room. This will be followed by a training on Thursday, November 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The orientation is required prior to attending the training.

Tutors must be 18 years old or older, speak English well enough to communicate with a learner, have graduated from high school or earned a GED, and read at a 12th grade level or higher.

Tutors are trained to work with learners on a one-to-one basis. Learners work at their own pace to achieve goals they set for themselves. For example, if a learner wants to write a resume, pass a high school equivalency test, improve their English language skills, or become a U.S. citizen, instruction is directed toward achieving that goal.  All program materials are provided free of charge. Hours are flexible to fit in with the tutors’ and learners’ individual schedules.

For more information and an application, call the Mariposa Library at (209) 966-2140, email rjgamble45@gmail.com, or stop by the Library during normal hours of operation. Leave your name and phone number or email address and the Literacy Coordinator will contact you. The adult literacy program is funded in part by a grant from the California State Library.
