passes

November 28, 2018 - MONO AND INYO COUNTIES– The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has updates on the following passes:

  • State Route 89 (Monitor Pass) is closed for the winter season at U.S. Hwy 395.
  • State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) is closed for the winter season just west of U.S.M.C Cold Weather Training Center, approximately 6 miles west of the junction at U.S. Hwy 395.
  • State Route 120W (Tioga Pass) is closed for the winter season.
  • State Route 120E (Mono Mills) will close due to the storm at 2:00 this afternoon. The reopening of this route is dependent upon favorable weather.
  • State Route 158N (June Lake Loop) is closed due to the snow between Silver Lake and Grant Lake. The reopening of this route is dependent upon favorable weather.
  • State Route 168W (Bishop Creek) is closed for the winter season above Aspendell.
  • State Route 203 (SR-203) from Mammoth Mountain Inn to the Mono/Madera County Line is now closed for the winter season.
  • State Route 270 (SR-270) (Bodie Road) is closed due to snow.  The reopening of this route is dependent upon favorable weather.

Several factors weigh in to influence the temporary closing, opening and seasonal closures of our pass roadways.  Storms, accumulation of snow, and road conditions are all considered in the decision-making process by Caltrans leadership. In the case of SR-120, Yosemite National Park leadership confers with Caltrans to coordinate closure of park entrance gates as well as Caltrans gates. For the safety of motorists and Caltrans crews, continual updating of these passes will be assessed until the seasonal closure of each is decided.

Caltrans reminds drivers to carry chains and to be prepared for winter driving conditions. Caltrans recommends carrying blankets, water, food, a shovel, gloves, a flashlight, and sand or kitty litter to provide traction in case your vehicle becomes stuck. The traveling public is advised to drastically slow down and proceed with caution.

For the latest road condition information, visit the Caltrans QuickMap site also available online and for mobile phones at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call the Caltrans Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623). Changeable Message Signs with flashing beacons will have information regarding the pass closures visible along the highways.
