December 24, 2018 - Timber harvest permitting in California has begun moving into a new era with the launch of CalTREES to internal State employees. CAL FIRE and Review Team caltreeslogoagencies (i.e., the State and Regional Water Boards, Department of Fish and Wildlife, and California Geological Survey) are using the new online system for reviewing timber harvesting documents. To facilitate faster and easier collaborative reviews, CAL FIRE has already entered timber harvesting documents into CalTREES and will continue to enter any paper forms submitted for review.

Registered Professional Foresters, Licensed Timber Operators, and Landowners will soon have the option to electronically submit, track, and update timber harvesting documents on-line via CalTREES. The public now also has access to search for timber harvesting data and information and will soon be able to submit comments electronically throughout the Fall and Winter of 2018/2019, and will offer trainings to the public, Registered Professional Foresters, Licensed Timber Operators, and Landowners as new functionality become available.

BENEFITS OF CALTREES

  • Easy-to-use timber harvesting forms, including reminders for RPFs, LTOs, and Landowners of regulatory requirements while entering their information
  • Easy-to-follow processes for submitting and reviewing timber harvest documents
  • Ability for public to request automatic notifications based on selected criteria (e.g., County, Watershed, Legal Description, Notice of Submission, Notice of Filing)
  • Better accountability of review timelines
  • Efficient collaboration for Review Team Agencies
  • Reduce the amount of manual, paper-based processes
  • Electronic notifications and two-way communication between the State and document/plan submitters
  • Accessible historical data and search functionality for the public
  • Streamline monitoring efforts
  • Replace outdated, 20+ year old technology

NEW TIMBER HARVESTING FORMS

In an effort to improve efficiency, CAL FIRE has released revised CalTREES forms that both conform with the Forest Practice Act and Rules and align with the new CalTREES software.
