AAUW Speech Trek sm
January 30, 2019 - Violence in the schools. Why is it escalating? What can be done? Could it happen here? Community members are invited to hear local high school students speak on this meaty topic at a speech contest hosted by Mariposa AAUW (American Association of University Women). The free event is scheduled for Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Mariposa County High School’s Fiester Auditorium.

Students must present a thoroughly researched, clearly organized and well rehearsed speech of 5-6 minutes on this compelling topic. They must work with a volunteer AAUW member who coaches them on content and delivery.

Three prominent community members will serve as judges for the event. Students are vying for cash awards and a chance to compete for a top prize of $1,500 in the state level competition held at the California AAUW Annual Meeting in April. Several Mariposa students in the past have been finalists in this prestigious event. Community members are encouraged to attend and applaud these exemplary students.

Mariposa AAUW supports other educational and service projects in the community as a branch of the national organization dedicated to lifelong learning and advancing equity for women and girls. AAUW supports local projects such as Tech Trek, a weeklong science camp for girls, Dinner with a Scientist, an evening for girls to interact with professionals in STEM careers and the Backpack Project to distribute needed school supplies.
