Pastor’s Corner is a weekly column from Pastor Wynter Sturtevant III of the Mariposa Reformed Baptist Church. The church is located in Mariposa, California at 4994 11th Street in the Seventh-day Adventist church building. Services are held at 10:00 A.M. on Sunday.

Pastors Corner 200February 1, 2019 - What do we think about when we hear that something is free? I know I think about the free furniture that we all see on the side of road. It is almost always accompanied by cardboard sign that lets everyone know that the lazy boy, couch, or bed we see next to the road is indeed a free piece of furniture that is up for the first person that wants it.  What I am getting at is this, we can often mistake that which is free to also be cheap. Think about someone who approaches you and offers you something to eat or drink. Now since I’ve been around young people and have tried to pull off my own share of pranks, I am immediately suspect of what is being offered. We can often think that there is a catch to things offered to us for free. In other words, we essentially fall into the false notion that something being free is a mask to cover up cheapness or worthlessness.Elder Wynter Sturtevant

This is not always the case and we should check ourselves when we think that what is free is necessarily cheap. How many family relics and keepsakes folks received without a price given? Does that mean the item is cheap? By no means, what this means is that the item is priceless! The value is so much and goes beyond monetary gain that to put a price on it would be an insult.

Folks, this illustration aptly fits the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Son of God became flesh and was full of grace and truth (John 1:14). This grace and truth is given to you who believe, for free. It is free because the price was already paid, paid for by Christ. So now the gift of salvation is given to us priceless, without price to us. We cannot pay for it, we cannot pay for that which has already been bought. The message of Christianity is not through Christ you can earn your forgiveness, earn your justification. What is the message is that through Christ alone we are forgiven.
