Pastor’s Corner is a weekly column from Pastor Wynter Sturtevant III of the Mariposa Reformed Baptist Church. The church is located in Mariposa, California at 4994 11th Street in the Seventh-day Adventist church building. Services are held at 10:00 A.M. on Sunday.

Pastors Corner 200February 7, 2019 - What is an important part of the Christian faith is the idea that we are not perfect covenant keepers with God. As we all know, we fail miserably in keeping the Law of God that is both written down in Scripture and in our hearts.  We try so hard to forget that we do indeed fall short of the goal line. We at times try to move the goalposts a little closer or remove them entirely. We sometimes even create new rules and claim they always have been there; creating a multitude of referees who try to jam (some might say Ram) their own Law into the game in the guise of Gospel truth.Elder Wynter Sturtevant

But I must tell you this reader, that what is important to the Christian faith, in fact what is essential to it, is the finished work of Christ who saves we covenant breakers. The Law shows our sin and fallenness, the Gospel saves us. Romans 5:1 reads, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Folks, there is a comfort in that verse that even I must go back to constantly. Daily even! When sin rages in me and I’m in such a dark state, the light of the Gospel shines through. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how those with faith in him are saved. The goalpost, the Law, is still there and it does what it needs to do very well. May you find faith in the Gospel that makes you at peace with God. It is the Gospel that proclaims that through Christ you are forgiven.
