Highway 49 Featured in Exhibit & First Spring Lecture - Spring Speaker Program Begins on March 2nd

February 21, 2019 - There will be three exciting presentations this spring about the history of our local area.  Each of the three, scheduled for the first Saturdays of March, April, and May, are free and open to the public.  All will be held at the IOOF hall, 5030 Main St. in Coulterville at 4:00 p.m.

The first, taking place on Saturday, March 2nd, will begin with songs by local musician, Keith Keenom.  This will be followed by a fascinating power point presentation from Mariposa native, Tom Phillips, who will walk us through the development of the stretch of Highway 49 from Coulterville to Mariposa.  This was the second of four distinct phases of the creation of Highway 49, that now extends from its southern terminus in Oakhurst north 310 miles to its northern terminus in Vinton.  The historic photos illustrate what a feat it was to construct the route along the steep and rocky slopes to link these two communities.  Fun fact: the initial meeting to promote public support for the extension of Hwy 49 south from Sonora to Mariposa took place here in Coulterville in 1929 with over 300 people in attendance!

NMCHC BkfstNorthern Mariposa County History Center Breakfast

Join the NMCHC for Breakfast and Spring Forward!!!

The second Sunday in March (Sunday, March 10th), is a big deal!  It not only is the date of the NMCHC’s monthly fundraising breakfast, but it is the first day of Daylight Savings Time!!!  Be sure and set your clocks ahead one hour before retiring on Saturday night, so you don’t miss out on breakfast which is served from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning in the Coulterville Old Schoolhouse at the corner of Broadway and Cemetery Streets.  Leave the cooking and clean-up that day to the dedicated bunch of volunteers who whip up a great breakfast of all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs cooked the way you like them, ham or sausage and fresh fruit.  Adults are $5.00, children $3.00 and a family of four (2 adults, 2 children) is just $15.00.

Proceeds of this monthly event, always on the second Sunday of the month, are used to cover operating expenses of the museum.  Make it a “twofer” and mosey on over to the museum after breakfast.

Be sure and check out what’s happening at the museum on the “Northern Mariposa County History Center” website & Facebook page.  Contact (209) 878-3015, info@coultervillemuseum.com for additional information or to make a reservation for a large group.  The Northern Mariposa County History Center was established as a 501c3 private, non-profit charitable organization in 1976, with the History Center opening to the public in 1980.  Displays and historic photos provide an authentic glimpse of the life and times of the pioneers who helped settle the area in the 1800’s.  Memberships and volunteer opportunities are available.
