March 21, 2019 - If you want to learn how to avoid having your life savings or retirement plans wiped out by the cost of care as you get older, a seminar on the topic is being offered by Martha Patterson, a certified elder law attorney, at the Oakhurst Branch Library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 30, 2019. The event will be held in the library’s Community Room at 49044 Civic Circle Dr., Oakhurst.

Patterson, a California certified specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law is the founder of Geisler Patterson Law. She focuses on elder law, asset protection and estate planning.

In her presentation, Patterson will address what she calls the “secrets” to getting help paying for nursing home care during the second half of your life.

“My mother-in-law suffered from dementia and I was able to use the “secret” strategies I discuss in my seminars to help pay for her care for eight years,” Patterson noted.

Patterson said she can help people plan for both what happens when they die and/or what happens when they or someone they love lives with dementia or another disabling condition.

Other highlights of her seminar include the “new” rules to qualify for veteran’s benefits; how to protect your belongings against your kid’s debts, divorce or disability; understanding Medi-Cal and how it works and preventing the state from taking your home.

She will also cover how to use VA benefits that help pay for high medical expenses, maximizing the inheritance you leave to your children and how to plan and pay for a nursing home.

Patterson, a practicing attorney for 35 years and her husband, Robert, are newcomers to Oakhurst where they recently moved from Los Angeles. Included in her numerous legal memberships are the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Southern California Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys of which she was a founding member and past president and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

She is the author of “The Nursing Home Dilemma” and co-author of the 2016 California edition of “Tax Free Money for Long Term Care.” She has been featured on numerous television and radio programs over the years and was able to help Kerri and Julie Kasem visit their dad, Casey Kasem, towards the end of his life. In that case, she was instrumental in Kerri Kasem obtaining conservatorship over her father’s medical care.

The free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library. For more information, call the library at (559) 683-4838 or visit www.oakhurstfobl.com. People can also contact Patterson by visiting her website at www.ElderLawMom.com.
