Yosemite Mariposa Rotary Art WinnerApril 2, 2019 - Early each spring, the Mariposa Yosemite Rotary holds a “Promotional Art Contest.”  Artists submit digital photos of their creations, featuring themes of art, wine, classic cars, Mariposa history, local scenery, flora, fauna or the Mariposa community.  The selected art will be used on postcards, posters, brochures, in social media or local newspapers.  The winning artist will have a complimentary booth at the Saturday, May 25th event on the historic Mariposa County Courthouse lawn from 11:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

At a recent Thursday morning meeting, all of the Rotarians present selected this year's winner from nine beautiful renditions presented in oils, mixed media, watercolors, colored pencils, and photography.  The winning piece is a multimedia illustration/watercolor.  Oakhurst artist Barbara Fruehe (pictured below) remarked, “This illustration has taken a month of Sundays!  The paper is a French smooth watercolor paper, illustrated in pencil, painted with M. Graham watercolors and some black waterproof ink, used in smaller detail.”

Barbara moved from Santa Cruz to this beautiful mountain area in 1981 to start a career as a graphic designer for the local newspaper. She remained in the foothills and commuted to McClatchy Newspapers in Fresno, creating display advertising for 5 years and eventually relocated back home to oversee the art department for Simply Smashing, Inc. Compressed T-Shirts and Promotional Products for 16 years, all the while freelancing graphics for local businesses. Some recognizable logos include Ducey’s on the Lake, The Pine’s Resort, Timberline Gallery, ARTober in Oakhurst, Madera County Fire Department, Harris Ranch logos, and a portfolio of other print media including special calligraphy menus for Erna’s Elderberry House. Currently Barbara enjoys working at home as the graphic artist for California Land Management. “After so many years of creating graphic design for others, I am finally taking some time to do what I’ve always wanted to do: illustrate and take a weekly watercolor class that I love. When I’m not holding hands with my Mac, I’m holding hands with my artist husband and four amazing grandkids or cheering our son at Badger Football.”
